Know Your Historic Home!

light bulbThe City of Huntington Historic Review Board is hosting an educational lecture and workshop series in 2014-2015 called “Know Your Historic Home.” Huntington Alert, Inc. is pleased to be a co-sponsor of the series. All events are free and open to the public. Please check back as additional events will be added as announced.

 

Tuesday, March 24th, 2015, 7 PM: What Style Is It?

Huntington County Historical Museum, 315 Court Street, Huntington

Huntington Alert will present “What Style is It?” at our regular public meeting to be held at the Huntington County Historical Museum. Learn the difference between a bungalow and a ranch, a Queen Anne’s turret and an Italianate’s cupola, and whether “Victorian” is an era or a style. We’ll take a photographic tour through the architectural history of Huntington County. Participants are encouraged to bring a photo of their home and we’ll help identify its style.

Saturday, April 11th, 2015, 10 AM-3 PM: Exterior Paint Workshop

Private Huntington Home

Huntington Alert presents this hands-on workshop. Participants will learn lead safety tips, proper methods for paint removal and preparing surfaces, how to make repairs with wood epoxy, and techniques for painting exterior wood siding and trim. Participation is limited and registration is required on a first-come, first-serve basis. Saturday, May 16th, 2015: Dating and Identifying Historic Photographs

Huntington City-Township Public Library Meeting Room, 255 W. Park Drive, Huntington

In honor of Historic Preservation Month, Joan Hostetler will present “Dating and Identifying Historic Photographs.” From boxes of unidentified photographs to discs of digital images, we all have family photographs that need attention. This workshop explores dating and identifying historic photographs. Hostetler will discuss how to examine and interpret photos, reviewing processes and formats from the daguerreotype to snapshot. She will also explore internal dating clues, such as clothing, hairstyles, automobiles, props, photographers’ backstamps, and even ear shapes. Program attendees are encouraged to bring along family photos for a show-and-tell consultation after the program and to share with the Indiana Album. Hostetler’s business, Heritage Photo & Research Services in Indianapolis, works with archives and individuals providing a range of services including photo preservation, research, cataloging, and digital imaging.

Saturday, May 16th, 2015: Indiana Album Scan-a-Thon – Share your photos for Indiana’s Bicentennial! 

9:30 AM – 4 P.M., Huntington City-Township Public Library Meeting Room, 255 W. Park Drive, Huntington

In conjunction with Hostetler’s presentation, we are hosting an Indiana Album Scan-a-Thon at the same location.This event brings historic photographs from the attic to the web by scanning, cataloging, and sharing photographs of all eras that are normally hidden in private albums and shoeboxes. Desired topics include: Indiana houses, farms, businesses, schools, churches, bands, clubs, street scenes, transportation, and interesting people (including portraits of prominent residents, people participating in activities, or great snapshots of everyday life). Technicians will make high resolution scans while you wait and images will be uploaded to Indiana Memory, a database of the Indiana State Library. Saturday, November 8th, 2014: “Researching Your Historic House”

1:30 P.M. – 4:00 P.M., Huntington City-Township Public Library Meeting Room, 255 W. Park Drive, Huntington

When was my home built? Who lived there? How has it changed? Connie Zeigler will show participants how to use local resources like maps, city directories, county histories, newspapers, and county records to answer these questions. Zeigler is an architectural historian with C. Resources, Inc. and has vast experience researching and writing about historic places.

10 A.M. to 12:30 P.M., St. Peter’s First Community Church Fellowship Hall, 206 Etna Avenue, Huntington

Presented by Ron Zmyslo. Participants will learn how to effectively save energy using glazing, storm windows, weather-stripping, and insulation. Registration is not required.

Ron’s morning presentation will be followed up by a blower door test demonstration from 2 to 4:30 P.M. at a private home in Huntington. Due to space restraints, participation for the demonstration is limited and registration is required on a first-come, first-serve basis.
